TOPP CLIP INSTRUCTION SHEET

The original Topp Clip was developed and patented by David Topp whose need to protect his cell phone products from theft was the key factor in the development of the technology.

Shortly after the patent was issued, David sold the patent to Erik Hoffer who refined and was first to produce the device.  Erik Hoffer refined the inspection process into what you see today as an industry standard technology.

The Topp Clip is used to bind and crimp the ½ inch nylon banding straps used on a standard pallet, slip tray or shipping enclosure to secure the load.   The Topp Clips’ function is to provide identification for the pallet and the assurance that the bands were not removed and replaced thereby leading to the potential for theft loss or the introduction of contraband goods into the pallet surreptitiously.

The Topp clip has 3 member components. The clip itself which is uniquely numbered, the plastic seal which is also uniquely numbered and the label which is placed a top the enclosure or pallet used to record all three unique numbers.  The process for application is defined in the power point attached.

The application requires the user to have a tensioner and crimper for ½ inch plastic banding, both of which are readily available at any packaging supply company.  There is also a requirement to have a suitable hole puncher to pierce the 4 layers of banding sealed into place by the topp clip. This hole is used to insert the plastic numbered seal through which serves to secure the bands and offer identification to the bands themselves.  Half inch nylon banding is also an industry standard product. Plastic banding is far more efficient and stronger than steel ribbon banding and is recommended in al cases where the Topp Clip technology is employed.

The first step is to apply one cross band around the pallet belly and typically over the stretch film and then to crimp the Topp Clip to secure that band. The second band is then threaded through the Topp Clip, in the opposite direction on the pallet, and tensioned and crimped in the same manner. Once the opposing bands are secure, should only one clip be needed (based on the size of the pallet or enclosure) you would then punch the center hole in the Topp Clip out with the punch provided in the sample kit and insert the uniquely numbered plastic seal. The seal is synched tightly leaving the flag or numbered portion of the seal exposed.    Finally the two unique numbers are recorded on the top red label for verification at point of delivery or inspection.

The person using the Topp Clip need not record all numbers as these are present on the red 3 x 5 label, however recording the Topp Clip number is essential for a verification check upon delivery.  It is always recommended to record each number on the clip assembly to insure the system is failsafe.
